Glasgow Warriors v Zebre

A win is a win but not a great performance. Sometimes it's about winning ugly. Tonight was definitely that. Sean Kennedy clearly has a bright future ahead of him. The one real bright spot on an otherwise not too great night. Hopefully the injuries to DTH & Moray Low aren't serious & both are back soon.

Here are some videos of Al Kellocks pre game chat, Shades post game chat and just for giggles, Clyde doing what he does best!

Glasgow Warriors v Zebre match preview

Glasgow Warriors v Zebre match preview
New boys Zebre have had a torrid start to the season, conceding 108 points and scoring just 33 of their own.
The home side Glasgow will be confident of making it two wins in a row at the Scotstoun Stadium on Friday evening, but a measure of caution should be applied. With the amount of changes Gregor Townsend has made to his team, there is a real danger that this could supply the visiting Italians with the foothold they need to cause an upset.
Looking at the players coming into the Glasgow side, they are talented replacements, but the concern could be that the unit of players won’t have had a chance to gel properly. This could be a particular concern for new signings prop Fainga’anuku, scrum half Matawalu and no.8 Strauss who should all make their first appearance. Developing and rotating the squad is a must in the Rabo Direct PRO12 but coming off the back of two wins, Glasgow will hope these changes, on the bench or otherwise, won’t disrupt their momentum.
Zebre themselves are sending over a team full of youngsters yet there is a core of experience in the side through the likes of Garcia, Bergamasco and Giazzon that should help them perform. One of Zebre’s main aims has to be an improved defensive display, and after their players have had a week extra to prepare for this match, they should be raring to go.
Glasgow’s backline is full of up and coming young talented players in the guise of Sean Kennedy, Bryan McGuigan and Fraser Thompson, where combined with more experienced players in Morrison, Jackson and DTH van der Merwe they will be looking to impress.
Comparing the two squads Glasgow, as the home side and with the greater experienced squad depth, go into this match as favourite. Zebre will be hit hard by the injuries to Bortalami and Perugini, and with them fielding a slightly developmental side themselves, the odds are greatly in Glasgow’s favour.
Thirteen changes, including numerous first time starts, is a risk, but it will be one Glasgow will reap the benefits of in terms of squad depth and experience, should they finish on the right side of the scoreboard.
Kick Off: 7.35pm
Referee: Leighton Hodges
Glasgow: F Thomson, T Seymour, B McGuigan, G Morrison, DTH van der Merwe, R Jackson, S Kennedy, G Reid, F Gillies, M Cusack, T Ryder, T Swinson, A Macdonald, Chris Fusaro (capt), J Strauss.
Replacements: D Hall, O Fainga’anuku, M Low, J Eddie, R Wilson, N Matawalu, P Horne, S Hogg

Zebra:  Daniel Halangahu, Leonardo Sarto, Matteo Pratichetti, Gonzalo Garcia (cap), Sinoti Sinoti, Luciano Orquera, Alberto Chillon, Andries Van Schalkwyk, Mauro Bergamasco, Filippo Cristiano, Michael van Vuren, Quintin Geldenhuys, Luca Redolfini,  Davide Giazzon, Matias Aguero

WARRIORS SUBMIT HEINEKEN CUP SQUAD

Glasgow Warriors have submitted the squad for the Heineken Cup. The inclusion of Chris Cusiter, Rory Lamont, Rob Harley and Duncan Weir from the current injured players list are all good signs that the boys will be back and match fit before long.

This still leaves 13 unselected players (some due to injury).

Townsend has stated:

“It’s a sign of the level of strength in depth we have that 13 players who will have a massive role to play for us across the season aren’t included in this squad.

“The Heineken Cup is a great competition and we’ll be going all out to hit the ground running in our pool when the time comes. For now, though, the focus is firmly on continuing our positive form in the RaboDirect PRO12 in our next two games against Zebre and Cardiff Blues.”

Is Townsend, planning ahead taking into account possible International duties for some of the Glasgow Warriors while keeping a firm eye on the, thus far, elusive Rabo Direct Pro 12 success?

Is this the squad you would select?

Glasgow Warriors v Connacht

We will be singing "Stand up for the Ulsterman" after the 1 minute silence for the Spence family, Rugby United

Glasgow Warriors v Connacht match preview
The Warriors make the return to the Scotstoun Stadium off the back of an impressive away win against defending champions the Ospreys. A heartening display, especially defensively, should give them a good chance of securing their first home win in their new ground.
Connacht approach this match after a second half mauling from the Scarlets, although they can be heartened by their first half’s defensive display. They make six changes for this game, and have a real concern at scrum half, with Frank Murphy adding to their long term injury list and will now have to rely heavily on 20 year old Kieran Marmion.
They aren’t alone with their scrum  half woes with Glasgow’s Cusiter having suffered a shoulder injury in his last appearance and is likely to be out until at least December. It’s a harsh blow for the player who was looking favourite to start in the Autumn Internationals for Scotland.
The home side have opted to stick with Duncan Weir at fly half, a decision that could help the less experienced Pyrgos in his stint in the number 9 jersey. There is no room for stand out player Fusaro in the backrow, but the unit of Eddie, Barclay and Wilson should still be one to cause the visitors a lot of problems.
In the backs they will be hoping to bring the effective and in form DTH van der Merwe into the game, although Connacht cannot afford to focus too much on him with S Lamont starting on the other flank.
The visitors approach this game with their typical wily forwards pack in what could well become a stodgy affair as both sides look to slow the ball down to suit their own needs. Players like Duffy and Loxton will be keen to get their hands on the ball, but if Glasgow defend as they did last week, they will find it difficult to break though.
Both teams will be hungry for the win, but the need to consolidate an away win and to secure a first home victory of the season should edge things Glasgow’s way. With a more dynamic pack and with an improved defensive unit in the backs should see them pulling clear in the last quarter, despite another determined and committed Connacht display
Even with Glasgow going into this match as favourites, they will have to be sure to keep their concentration and their composure for the duration, as if there’s one team in this league that is always capable of an upset, it’s Connacht.
Glasgow Warriors : Peter Murchie, Sean Lamont, Alex Dunbar, Peter Horne, DTH van der Merwe, Duncan Weir, Henry Pyrgos, Ryan Grant, Dougie Hall, Moray Low, Tom Ryder, Al Kellock (Captain), James Eddie, John Barclay, Ryan Wilson.
Replacements : Finlay Gillies, Mike Cusack, Gordon Reid, Tim Swinson, Angus Macdonald, Sean Kennedy, Scott Wight, Troy Nathan.
Connacht : Gavin Duffy, James Loxton, Robbie Henshaw, Dave McSharry, Mark McCrea, Matthew Jarvis, Kieran Marmion, Brett Wilkinson, Adrian Flavin, Nathan White, George Naoupu, Dave Gannon, Johnny O’Connor, Willie Faloon Eoin McKeon.
Replacements : Kevin O’Byrne, Denis Buckley, Rodney Ah You, Michael Swify, Mick Kearney, Dave Moore, Jack Carty, Mata Fifita.

Ospreys 10 – 28 Glasgow Warriors

Ospreys 10 – 28 Glasgow Warriors

Ospreys 10 – 28 Glasgow Warriors
It was an evening to forget at the Liberty Stadium for home side Ospreys. Error after error and a tame start by their usually fearsome pack gifted possession and momentum to Glasgow.
A long kick down field and a brilliant take from DTH van der Merwe saw him easily slip an Ospreys tackle to race down the length of the pitch to score. Ospreys wing Dirksen would have been better served to have tried to chase back to stop a try, instead of complaining at the officials about a suspected block that wasn’t.
The first half got progressively worse for the Ospreys as any attempt to form an attack was easily nullified by a superb Glasgow defensive display, and a standout performance from no 7 Chris Fusaro helped momentum stay with the visitors.
Pressure from Glasgow soon told when the Ospreys had a defensive scrum close to their line. Webb spilled the ball, and bafflingly he turned to appeal to the referee to claim he had been interfered with. Glasgow, rightly playing to the whistle, scooped up the loose ball and crossed easily for a try, breaking through the tackle of prop Aaron Jarvis.
The game continued to stutter in an error strewn affair, with Glasgow adding an extra 3 half time came with the home side trailing 15 – 0.
The Ospreys started the second half with the passion and commitment that they had failed to show in the first, yet despite an increase in possession and territory, they failed to convert any of their chances. Then in a period of defending, Webb obstructed an attacking Glasgow player and was duly sent to the bin. He was replaced by Kahn Fotuali’i when his ten minutes were up.
The introduction of squad captain Alun Wyn Jones to the pitch gave the Ospreys the drive they needed to finally get points on the board. A strong driving maul resulted in a Glasgow yellow card for James Eddie when it was brought down just short and a few phases later Ian Evans was able to crash over to score. Dan Biggar converted.
No sooner had they scored when Glasgow hit back with a second try for DTH van de Merwe. Hibbard looked to have done enough in tackling him low, but he was not held and showing great strength and awareness he crossed for a well taken try, with Weir again converting.
The game moved into a period for the Ospreys’ dominance in territory and Glasgow had to defend fiercely to keep them out, with Fusaro again key to slowing the Ospreys’ game down. They did not help themselves when time and again they chose the wrong option and wasted numerous overlaps, failing to take their chances.
Going into the last ten minutes the home side had only managed to snatch another three points and Glasgow started to dominate once more. Replacement fly half Jackson slotted over a further three points.  The home fans were left disappointed by a despondent Ospreys performance and Glasgow ended up deserving winners. Having won the battle of the breakdown and with such a committed and assured defensive display the extra clinical edge has certainly restored pride to the shirt of the Warriors.
Full time: Ospreys 10 – 28 Glasgow
Referee: Leo Colgan
Teams
Ospreys: Richard Fussell; Hanno Dirksen, Jonathan Spratt, Ashley Beck, Tom Grabham; Dan Biggar, Rhys Webb; Duncan Jones, Richard Hibbard, Aaron Jarvis, Ian Gough, Ian Evans, George Stowers, Justin Tipuric (capt), Joe Bearman.

Ospreys v Glasgow Warriors match preview

Hi all,

Moving forward Siobhan Corcoran will be writing match previews for the Glasgow Warriors games. here is her first piece!

Ospreys v Glasgow Warriors match preview

Played two, lost two. It makes unhappy reading for the Ospreys and their visiting rivals Glasgow Warriors.

Both sides made the play-offs last season playing high quality rugby but so far this season they are looking painfully short of that standard. For the Ospreys it is their lack of cohesion in their back play. For Glasgow it is their weak defence and their instability at half back that seems to be a pressing concern.

With regards to Glasgow’s defence, it makes the decision to have last season’s defence coach Gary Mercer, who helped Glasgow to the second best defensive record in the league, removed from his post all the more baffling. Glasgow’s strength was based on their defence, wearing their opponent down and then taking advantage of it. Not so this season.

Both teams need to reach the top of their game and quickly if they are going to have a realistic chance of truly challenging for the playoffs. Two losses is not disastrous, but the reasons behind the losses are a greater cause for concern and are problems that need to be fixed – and quickly.

Looking towards Friday night’s fixture at the Liberty Stadium, it is shaping up into being another forward dominated display with the hope that the backs, from the Ospreys at the very least, can keep their composure to produce the points that will be needed.

The backrow area looks set to be another great battle with the likes of Tipuric and Barclay contending with each other. Fly half will also be key. Glasgow have rightly started with the more conservative and stable Weir over Jackson, and will hope that his kicking is point perfect to give them the territory and points they need. The Ospreys have returned Dan Biggar to the starting line- up. Against such a physical pack of forwards it is the sensible option to play a 10 that is defensively strong and more tactically aware. It makes the decision to start with the more creative Morgan last week against Ulster all the more baffling.

The Ospreys have a far better centre partnership and this will be where they will look to press their advantage. The packs are evenly matched so it will be in the back play that this game is won or lost. The match is looking to be a close and tense affair with the pressure to win affecting both teams, but for the home side to put right last week’s loss, and reward their fans with a much needed win.

Teams

Ospreys: Richard Fussell; Hanno Dirksen, Jonathan Spratt, Ashley Beck, Tom Grabham; Dan Biggar, Rhys Webb; Duncan Jones, Richard Hibbard, Aaron Jarvis, Ian Gough, Ian Evans, George Stowers, Justin Tipuric (capt), Joe Bearman.

Replacements: Scott Baldwin, Ryan Bevington, Joe Rees, Alun Wyn Jones, Sam Lewis, Kahn Fotuali’i, Matthew Morgan, Andrew Bishop.

Glasgow Warriors: Peter Murchie; Tommy Seymour, Alex Dunbar, Peter Horne, DTH van der Merwe; Duncan Weir, Chris Cusiter; Ryan Grant, Dougie Hall, Mike Cusack, Tom Ryder, Ali Kellock (capt), John Barclay, Chris Fusaro, Ryan Wilson.

Replacements: Finlay Gillies, George Hunter, Gordon Reid, James Eddie, Angus Macdonald, Henry Pyrgos, Ruaridh Jackson, Sean Lamont.
